Tacoma LNG

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is building a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on the Tideflats adjacent to the land and waters of the Puyallup Tribe. The social justice and ecological risks of this project are egregious – both the Tribal Council and Native Water Warriors have raised significant concerns about tribal sovereignty and consultation, safety dangers, Puget Sound water quality, and the health of the Sound’s ecosystems.

This 8 million gallon plant would store and distribute highly volatile fracked gas on an existing Superfund site. In addition to the Puyallup Reservation, the blast zone would include the NW Immigrant Detention Center and residential neighborhoods with schools and daycares. In a time when clean energy is growing, PSE is trying to lock our region into another polluting fossil fuel for at least 40 years.

In December 2019, we were disappointed that after much community opposition, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) granted the project’s Clean Air Permit, the last required for the project. In response, two legal appeals were put in motion: one filed by the Puyallup Tribe regarding tribal consultation and community safety, and another filed by environmental partners challenging the project’s climate impact. These appeals were denied by the Pollution Control Hearings Board in November 2021, and the Puyallup Tribe and their environmental partners are appealing the appeal denial in court.

Puyallup Tribe and Community Organizations Challenge Decision Allowing Dangerous Tacoma LNG Facility to Operate

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians and several community and environmental organizations are appealing the WA Pollution Control Hearings Board’s November decision to uphold Puget Sound Energy’s Tacoma LNG facility’s clean air permit in Pierce County Superior Court. The Puyallup Tribal Council said in a statement. “We were put here to protect these lands and waters and that is what we will continue to do. We will continue the fight. Too much is at stake.”

Tacoma LNG Appeal Denied

People of faith have been in a prayerful stance of solidarity supporting the Puyallup Tribe and co-litigants’ appeal of PSE’s immoral project. We are incredibly disappointed that the PCHB failed to make the right decision to uphold the Tribe’s request for further review of this dirty and dangerous fracked gas facility.

PSE Found Guilty by the People

Earth Ministry/WAIPL’s Program & Outreach Director Jessica Zimmerle spoke at a March 24 Zoom press conference hosted by the Power Past Fracked Gas Coalition and Earthjustice. The Puyallup Tribe of Indians and several environmental organizations have appealed Tacoma LNG’s clean air permit and appeal hearings begin Monday, April 12.
