Stand with the Puyallup Tribe against LNG

“Natural gas,” which in reality is “fracked gas,” is the next big fossil fuel industry threat, with an immediate danger in the form of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant being built adjacent to the Puyallup Tribe’s Reservation in Tacoma.

This 8 million gallon LNG plant would store and distribute highly volatile fuel on an existing Superfund site. If this facility goes online, it will lock our region into another polluting fossil fuel for at least 40 years. Now is the time to invest in clean energy, not dirty fuels of the past.

The most significant moral concern regarding this project is the environmental injustice of it being located directly adjacent to the land of the Puyallup Tribe, who have been outspoken against the LNG plant from the start. Both the Tribal Council and Native activists have raised significant concerns about tribal sovereignty and consultation, safety dangers for their community, Puget Sound water quality, and the health of nearby wetlands and the entire Tideflats ecosystem.

In keeping with our history of honoring tribal requests for assistance, Earth Ministry/WAIPL is supporting the Puyallup in their opposition to the LNG plant. Clergy and religious leaders in our network, please join us by signing this letter to Governor Inslee. We are asking our Governor to honor the request made earlier this year by Puyallup and 14 other Northwest Tribes seeking his support of their request for a stop work order on this project.
