Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring. Even so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt. Often we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness. For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope.

2025 introduces the Catholic Church’s Jubilee celebration, or Holy Year, which focuses on themes of Hope, “spes non confundit” (hope does not disappoint). At Earth Ministry/Washington Interfaith Power & Light we want to highlight this Jubilee’s theme and encourage our community to cultivate and sustain practices of hope in the face of adversity. Whether the practices is taking pilgrimages, prayers, or other rituals, we want to highlight these different practices and backgrounds to inspire one another this Spring!
Journey Towards Jubilee
Our first program during this Season of Jubilee was our Earth Month kickoff event, Journey Towards Jubilee: How Sacred Traditions Create and Sustain Hope Through Difficult Times, on April 1, 2024 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on Zoom. This panel event brought together voices from multiple sacred traditions and create space for panelists, hosts, and attendees alike to learn more about the strengths and inspiration that each speaker and their tradition bring when it comes to fostering and nurturing hope.
