Honoring a larger commitment to environmental stewardship and healthy communities, Peace Lutheran Church in West Seattle recently celebrated the installation of two rain gardens and five cisterns that will help control stormwater runoff that contributes to pollution in Puget Sound.
The church got financial support for the project through the RainWise Program, a joint effort between King County and Seattle Public Utilities that offers rebates to cover costs to install rain gardens or cisterns on private property.
Peace Lutheran Church is recognized as a Greening Congregation since 2014 by Seattle-based Earth Ministry.
Places of worship are often excellent candidates for RainWise because their large square footage, parking lots and roof space yield a great deal of stormwater to capture and control.
King County and SPU recently partnered with Al Noor Mosque on a RainWise project completed last fall.
By controlling stormwater, property owners, including homeowners, can support the city and county goals to control overflows of sewage and stormwater that occur in waterways during heavy rains.
