The Animals’ Lawsuit Against Humanity
May 16 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Earth Ministry/WA IPL will host a book discussion and panel with Rabbi Anson Laytner, discussing his book The Animals’ Lawsuit Against Humanity, which features a section on traditional Jewish materials that Rabbi Ellen Bernstein helped put together when she first began Shomrei Adamah.
“In this interfaith and multicultural fable, eloquent representatives of all members of the animal kingdom—from horses to bees—come before the respected Spirit King to complain of the dreadful treatment they have suffered at the hands of humankind. During the ensuing trial, where both humans and animals testify before the King, both sides argue their points ingeniously, deftly illustrating the validity of both sides of the ecology debate.”
The first written version of this story comes from members of the Order of Pure Brethren, which is “a Sufi order in the environs of Basra, Iraq sometime in the 10th century of the Common Era,” eventually translated into Hebrew in 1316 CE, and became popular among European Jewish communities in the 19-20th centuries!
This multifaith, multicultural book will be a lovely, connective event where we can reflect and discuss not only relationships with each other, but also among the difference species that share our Earth and are harmed by our actions.
