The Pledge of Allegiance

On First Friday, November 1, from 4pm – 7pm, there will be the reception for Rev. Gen Heywood’s art titled “The Pledge of Allegiance” at Gonzaga University Urban Art Center, 125 S Stevens St 3rd Floor, Downtown Spokane.

In this exhibit 12 images combine portions of The Pledge with various conditions and situations of our US flag. The exhibit is similar to a photographic essay that develops in intensity and ends with hope. The intent of the exhibit is for conversations to happen between the viewer and the art as well as the possibility that the viewers will entering into conversations with each other. Those who enter the exhibit are asked to take time with each image and to look deeply and allow for a wide range of emotions from peaceful to hostile. Some images contain ironies that arise between the words of the pledge and the situation of the flag. Sometimes there is humor.

Rev. Heywood has presented this exhibit to a Gonzaga class on Leadership and Communication Ethics and to a National Park Photography Expedition Master Class. In both situations, people come to this with caution and even an edge that transformed into conversation. The day after the presentation to the Master Class, two photographers of opposite political views were still talking about it with each other.
