Op Ed: Blessing for the Totem Pole Journey

Fantastic faith leader, Rev. Charis Weathers of Echoes Lutheran Church in Bellingham, wrote an eloquent Op-Ed for the August 14 edition of Cascadia Weekly. The piece is a reflection as she prepared a blessing for the kick-off ceremony of the Lummi Nation’s Totem Pole Journey.

Charis speaks from the heart as she explains how this action is grounded in her values and theology. As people of faith, we are called to be good stewards of God’s good Earth and to stand up for our neighbors suffering injustice. Coal export threatens the longevity of our local and global ecosystems and would be detrimental to the spiritual and economic life-way of the Lummi people.

Referencing multiple written statements from the faith community to the Lummi, Rev. Weathers calls for the faith community to remain in solidarity with the tribe as them embark on this Totem Pole Journey.
