A Native American tribe demands the return of its spiritual relative \u2014 an orca<\/h1>\n

Whales are a staple in the waters off the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n

The local culture is so wrapped up in a whale identity that Seattle\u2019s metro bus cards are called \u201corca\u201d passes for the type of whale also known as killer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe we have orcas in our soul in this state,\u201d\u00a0Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said last spring.<\/p>\n

And the native tribes see them as spiritual relatives.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why not only the locals but also people around the world were transfixed for 17 days this past summer as a 20-year-old orca \u2014 known as J-35 or Tahlequah \u2014 birthed a calf, only to see it die a half-hour later. (continued…)<\/p>\n
