In caring for creation as people of faith, we have a particular responsibility to learn about the devastating changes that are taking place in ocean waters near and far. Since 2005, the wild oysters of Washington's coast have not reproduced due to the acidification of our ocean's waters. This example is only one of many that demonstrates how the rapid acidification in recent times is changing marine ecosystems and threatening to wipe out species. The increasing acidification of the ocean has resulted from the increased absorption of CO2 emissions. Oceans are now 30% more acidic than they were two hundred years ago.

Learn more about the deadly and far-reaching consequences of ocean acidification on Saturday, March 26th at First Congregational UCC.  An evening program that day will feature a short video called "Acid Test" and a presentation by Dr. Richard Feely, a scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Feely is an expert on ocean acidification in the Pacific Northwest.  Additionally, the evening will showcase a Children's art display entitled, "I Love Oceans." The event is sponsored by Coal Free Washington and will be facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt.  The reception will begin at 6:30 pm, and the program will start at 7pm.
