A New Harmony: the Spirit, the Earth and the Human Soul

J. Philip Newell will give a series of lectures on February 11, 12 and 13 at University Congregational United Church of Christ in Seattle, WA. The theme for the weekend with Rev. Dr. Newell is “A New Harmony: the Spirit, the Earth and the Human Soul.”


J. Philip Newell is a poet, a scholar and a teacher. Formerly Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, he is currently Writer Theologian for the Scottish Cathedral of the Isles as well as Companion Theologian for the American Spirituality Centre of Casa del Sol in New Mexico. He is internationally acclaimed for his work in the field of Celtic Spirituality including his best known titles Listening for the Heartbeat of God and his poetic book of prayer Sounds of the Eternal. He is a Church of Scotland minister with a passion for ecumenical and interfaith dialogue. Canadian by birth, he lives in Edinburgh with his family where he undertook his doctoral research in Celtic Christianity. Since then he has played a leading role on both sides of the Atlantic in the re-birthing of a creation spirituality for today. His book, Christ of the Celts: the Healing of Creation was published in 2008.


The Friday evening lecture on February 11, 2011 at 7 pm, is titled “The Ancient Harmony.” Saturday, February 12th is a series of 2 lectures from 10 am – 3 pm, on “The Broken Harmony” and “The New Harmony.”
J Philip Newell will also be speaking at University Congregational United Church of Christ on Sunday, February 13th, giving a talk at 9 am on “Christ, Creation & Consciousness” and preaching a sermon on Made in the Image of God during the 10 am worship service. The Sunday events are free and open to the public.


Advance ticket sale price is $50 for tickets to the Friday/Saturday lecture series. Tickets will be available at the door for $60, as space allows. Friday evening only tickets are $15. UCUCC offers a discounted price of $25 for the Friday/Saturday series for college or seminary students. Group rates and scholarships are available.
